St. Louis was hit by a monumental tornado last week. Let's get out there to help out our neighbors!
We'll meet at O'Fallon Park in the YMCA parking lot, where Action STL is directing volunteers to help with various tasks. Depending on what you want to do that day, you could help gather, organize, or distribute supplies or you could volunteer to go out to help with cleanup efforts around the city. You can choose to do what you're most comfortable with! This cleanup effort is led by Action STL, not Open Space STL.
Where: O'Fallon Park YMCA, 4343 W Florissant Ave, St. Louis, MO 63115. We will meet in the parking lot. Look for the tents and a few people wearing Open Space shirts! (Our Trash Bash shirts say "I've Been Known to Talk Trash" or you might see someone wearing an Operation Clean Stream shirt, probably with a turtle on it.)
When: We plan to meet at 9:30am. The volunteer day runs from 9:30-3pm, but most people will not stay for the entire day. If you want to meet up with the Open Space STL group, we'll see you at 9:30! If you want to volunteer at a different time on your own, that's fine, too! Make sure you check in when you get there, so you can be directed to the area with the most need, that also fits your skills and level of comfort.
WHAT TO WEAR:
- Clothes that you don't mind getting dirty, we recommend long pants and sleeves
- Sturdy shoes or closed toe boots
- Dress for the weather!
WHAT TO BRING:
- A filled bottle of water - we recommend reusable!
- Tools will be provided, but if you prefer your own, you are welcome to bring them
- Sunscreen
- Bug/tick spray
- Cleanup supplies, if you have them! If you have a chainsaw (and you have experience using it), there are a lot of tree limbs that need to be cut up.
Action STL still needs supplies, too!
- nonperishable foods (if in cans, they prefer pop-tops, since some people do not have access to can openers)
- individually wrapped food items
- hygiene items
- water
- ice
- flashlights
- reusable bags
- cleaning supplies (detergent, soap, disinfecting wipes, sponges, paper towels, etc.)
- bandaids/first aid kids
You can drop them off at our office on Wednesday until 8pm or bring them directly to O'Fallon Park any time until Sunday.
(Please, no clothes, towels, toys, etc. Action STL is not taking those items at this time.)
