Volunteer: Honeysuckle Hack and Removal at Greensfelder Park on 2/1/26

We’re excited to invite you to this opportunity to help beautify Greensfelder Park. Together, we’ll be clearing invasive honeysuckle from the woods near the Mustang Shelter and trail. This effort will not only enhance the scenic views from this popular spot but also help native species thrive.

WHERE: Greensfelder Park - Mustang Shelter on Allenton Road. Exact location here.

WHEN: Wednesday, Feb 1 from 9am to 12pm. Volunteer check-in will begin at 8:45am. 

WHAT TO WEAR:

Clothes that you don't mind getting dirty, we recommend long pants and sleeves, as well as closed toe shoes.

Sturdy shoes or boots

Dress for the weather!

WHAT TO BRING: 

A filled bottle of water - we recommend reusable!

Tools will be provided, but if you prefer your own, you are welcome to bring them. Electric Chain saws are ideal for cutting the larger bushes

Bug/tick spray, and some will be provided (may not be necessary depending on the weather)

WHAT:  The west side of Skunk Prairie has an emerging savanna of oaks, at least if we can clear the invasive vines away. The area has been recently mowed but removing invasives / aggressive vines like porcelain berry, grape, and euonymus will require hand work. The swamp white oaks will appreciate the attention with continued growth and maybe a mast of acorns for wildlife.

WHERE: Little Creve Coeur Ecological Area 152 River Valley Drive, Chesterfield, MO 63017 Exact location here. 

From the South Parking, proceed through the gate north about 1/4 mile to the pavilion, we'll meet there.

 WHEN: SUNDAY, Feb 22, 2026. 9am - 12 noon. Volunteer check-in will begin at 15 min before event. 

WHAT TO WEAR:

Clothes that you don't mind getting dirty, we recommend long pants and sleeves, as well as closed toe shoes. Poison ivy was growing here last fall, but should be dormant. Remember, intact vines may still case a rash! Hand washing will be available.

WHAT:  The north end of Unit 8 (part of Old Trees Area) is becoming choked with bush honeysuckle. But the white oaks, large cottonwoods and sycamore will appreciate the attention, as will the wildlife.

WHERE: Little Creve Coeur Ecological Area 152 River Valley Drive, Chesterfield, MO 63017 Exact location here. 

We will assemble in the parking lot and then carpool to the work area near Highway 141.

 WHEN: Saturday, March 14, 2026. 9am - 12 noon. Volunteer check-in will begin at 15 min before event. 

WHAT TO WEAR:

Clothes that you don't mind getting dirty, we recommend long pants and sleeves, as well as closed toe shoes.

Sturdy shoes or boots

Dress for the weather!

WHAT TO BRING: 

A filled bottle of water - we recommend reusable!

Hand tools will be provided. If you prefer your own power tools, you are welcome to bring them

Sunscreen

Porta potties were present at the South Parking in December. Water for hand washing will be available

Herbicide use is encouraged but is optional; PPE is not optional for volunteers handling herbicide.

WHAT: Welcome the spring by joining us to combat invasive species in our local parks! 

As a part of our Operation Wild Lands program and the Missouri Department of Conservation's Back to Nature STL grant, Open Space STL is partnering with the City of Crestwood and Beautify Crestwood on a series of stewardship events at Crestwood Park. This volunteer opportunity will focus on removing the invasive Bush honeysuckle shrub from the park.

*Due to the steepness of creekbanks, this event is not recommended to young children or those with limited mobility.* 

WHEN: 9am - 12pm, Saturday, March 28th. Volunteer check-in will begin at 8:45 am. 

WHERE: Meet at the Crestwood Park Lower Pavilion, Lindenhurst Dr, St. Louis, MO 63126. Volunteers can park in the lot off Lindenhurst Dr, just behind Long Elementary -- see map for exact location.
