Volunteer: Invasive Removal at the Carondelet Park Rec Complex Baseball Field on March 14thInvasive Removal at the Sandlot at the Carondelet Park Rec Complex
The outfield fence at the city's only public baseball field is covered in invasive plants and could use some tidying up! Join the Friends of Carondelet Park as we clean up the outfield fence to improve safety and visibility in the outfield. We will begin with a quick safety and plant identification lesson before we get started. This event will be much simpler than other invasive removal events because we know that we need to clean up the entire fence. Everything must go! If we have enough volunteers for the baseball field, some may split off and work on removing new honeysuckle sprouts in areas we cleared in 2025. Snacks and refreshments will be provided. Volunteer: Restoring Oak Woodlands at Laumeier Sculpture Park on March 14thThrough the CSA program, Open Space STL and the St. Louis County Department of Parks & Recreation partner to restore and actively manage Laumeier’s native oak woodlands—some of which are more than 100 years old. While often overlooked amid Laumeier’s nationally significant sculpture collection, these woodlands are vital ecological assets now threatened by invasive species, particularly bush honeysuckle. “Open Space STL and St. Louis County Parks & Recreation are partnering through the Community Stewardship Alliance to restore the native oak woodlands at Laumeier Sculpture Park,” said Dennis Hogan, St. Louis County Department of Parks & Recreation. “These mature oak trees have survived tornadoes, ice storms, and decades of land-use changes, but the woodland ecosystem beneath them is struggling. Invasive honeysuckle is preventing sunlight from reaching native wildflowers and young oak seedlings, disrupting the entire web of life in the park. Oak woodland restoration at Laumeier will be about bringing change back to these woods. To do nothing is not an option. With volunteer effort and long-term commitment, we can begin reclaiming this landscape for native plants and the wildlife that depends on them.” A Landmark Where Art and Nature Meet Founded in 1976, Laumeier Sculpture Park is one of the first and largest dedicated sculpture parks in the United States. Located on 98 acres in St. Louis County, Laumeier features more than 70 large-scale outdoor sculptures and serves approximately 360,000 visitors annually. Free and open daily, the park is internationally recognized and accredited by the American Alliance of Museums, operating in partnership with St. Louis County Parks and Recreation. Beyond its artistic significance, Laumeier’s open spaces and woodlands play a critical environmental role in the region—making stewardship and restoration efforts essential to its future. WHAT: CSA volunteers will receive focused training to help remove invasive species, support native plant regeneration, and monitor long-term ecological health—work that benefits wildlife, park visitors, and the broader community. WHERE: Laumeier Sculpture Park, West Entrance, 9050 Rott Rd, Sappington, MO 63127. Exact location here. Volunteer: Native Tree Planting and Mulching in Benton Park on March 22
Friends of Benton Park was a 2025-26 recipient of the Missouri Department of Conservation Community Forestry Cost Share Grant. As a recipient, our namesake Benton Park received $25,000 in much needed tree care, including the removal of 7 large trees and the pruning of several others. Trees for removal were identified by a collaborative team of MDC, St. Louis City, and neighborhood partners. These trees are dead or dying, making them hazards to the public who enjoy the park. A requirement of this grant is that we plant two new native trees for every tree removed, ensuring our native tree population continues to grow and thrive. We will be planting 14 trees this spring, on March 22, from 9:30am-12pm Please join us and help us plant these new additions in our beautiful park! We will also mulch existing trees in the park, which helps with water retention, weed suppression, and give a buffer for the lawn mowers to prevent damage to trees. Tools and gloves will be provided (feel free to bring your own gloves if you have some you like). Please bring water. WHERE: Exact location here. We will meet on the bridge over the lake. Street parking is available all along Arsenal on the north side of the park (just don’t park at a bus stop where signs indicate “no parking”). WHEN: Sunday, March 22, 2026 from 9:30am-12:00pm.
